I have always loved reading. The smell of new books, breaking in the spine, sitting back and getting lost in a story. I have always been a strong reader, and in elementary school was always reading ahead in our books. My favorite part of the day was SSR – Sustained Silent Reading. I was probably the only kid in class who looked forward to it, but I loved reading.
As I’ve gotten older and had children of my own, I love seeing them develop a love of reading as well. We read to them as babies, we read bedtime stories, and books are always available to them (tangible and digital).
Summer has been one of my favorite times to read because there’s no rush. You can spread a blanket on the grass and read, you can sit in a chair, or when it’s raining you can curl up with a blanket on the sofa. There’s no reason NOT to read!
To make summer reading even more fun for your children – invite their favorite characters along with the Disney Story Central app, available through iTunes to your Apple device! Disney Story Central is the largest collection of Disney digital stories, featuring a wide array of Disney stories and characters that kids and families know and love. The cross-platform experience is available via iPhone and iPad app, tablet-optimized website and Video on Demand (AT&T U-Verse).
There are SO many books to choose from, and for all levels of reading too. You can even use the customizable bookshelves for each member of your family to help organize your library of books! Disney Story Central also gives families the freedom to choose the reading experience that suits them best, whether through an annual subscription service or a-la-carte options, using Disney Book Tokens.
Tip: If you are potty-training or working on older children and chores, tokens make GREAT rewards!
The subscription service gives kids unlimited access to Disney Story Central’s expansive library of books for $7.99 a month.
The Disney Book Token system helps parents empower their kids to pick out the books they WANT to read, allowing them to build their own collection of stories, featuring the characters they love. Tokens work like currency, in which one token is worth one book and are used to download books.
Before you purchase a book, you can read the “back cover” synopsis and even PREVIEW the book! I really like this feature because it lets me take a quick look to see if our oldest, who is 10 and struggling with reading, will be able to read it on his own or challenge him.
If you have Disney fans in your home, and you want to encourage them to read more or expand your library for reading to them, I highly recommend you check out the Disney Story Central app. It’s great to use at home, or on the go when traveling/stuck in traffic/waiting rooms/etc!
You can head straight to iTunes to download the app (it’s a free app with in-app purchases).

Psst! Here’s a look at just some of the books my kids have selected…
