What is the Paleo Diet?

Sharing is caring!

If you haven’t heard of this type of diet then you must have been living under a rock, it’s been seen everywhere now! Simply described as the “caveman” diet, and even though we can’t be 100% sure this is the diet that cavemen would have chosen, we can guess this might be the closest thing we can get to it. Even though we believe that Paleo was how our ancient ancestors ate, it has been noted that  Walter L. Voegtlin helped with the rise in popularity in the 1970s with new ideas and the way he shared them.

In short, Paleo cuts out a lot of the ‘processed’ foods and anything with additives. A few variations and debates are surrounding this diet, but it can be broken down quite simply.

What you CAN eat

Let’s start with what you can eat, in short, this is meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruit, seeds, and only healthy oils and fats. If you think about it, this is a pretty broad range of food, and you’re definitely not going to miss out on much with this list of items to get stuck into!

The nutrients you’ll receive from this diet will be plentiful, and you will be getting all of the vitamins you need if you keep your vegetable and fruit intake high!

There are many recipes online for a tasty Paleo meal, and you’d be surprised at how creative some fitness vloggers are, so check out Youtube for some extra hints and tips!

What you CAN’T eat

If you’re going to be sticking to the Paleo diet rigidly, you are going to want to avoid grains, vegetable oils, margarine and anything processed. Beans and lentils are also out of the equation, as are trans fats and most dairy products. So even though you’re cutting out bread, the obvious answer is anything we tend to find difficult digest is no longer ‘allowed.’ However, since high trans fats have been linked to obesity and processed foods linked to other health problems, it’s easy to get on board with this one!

Example of a Day

Breakfast- Avocado and Eggs with Orange Juice

Snack- Seeds and a Banana

Lunch- Beef strip salad with onion flakes and homemade dressing

Snack- Nuts

Dinner- Chicken breast with Asparagus

Dessert- Melon and Strawberries

A lot of people have reported this way of eating has improved their health and wellbeing significantly, it’s not easy to keep to a plan of any kind, but since Paleo is such a simple and widely followed diet you can find many services and support for this option.

If you’re already a great chef in the kitchen then creating your own recipes from the Paleo list will be easy for you, but even if you’re not and you need to keep it simple, there are just some simple rules to follow, and you really can’t go wrong! Many people before you have experimented and put plans together to share, and you will be surprised at just how many people are following this method in 2019.
