“Who is your hero?” is a question I think we are all asked at some point in our lives. Whether it’s a silly game between childhood friends where you answer with Batman or Superman, or a serious and thought-provoking adult conversation, we all can answer this question differently.

A hero can be so many different people, and all for very valid reasons. You could have a hero because they fought for our freedom, or because they rescue animals from high-kill shelters. Your hero could be a friend, a family member, or even a complete stranger.

For me, I have too many to list. My entire family, on every side possible, houses so many heroes who have served our country. My future brother in law, my brother in law, cousins, uncles, my father in law, grandparents… I tried so hard to think of everyone but it’s simply too hard. I’m so proud to have such strong individuals in my family!

This guy? He’s my brother in law. He served in the Army, married a gorgeous girl and overcame the struggles that can often accompany growing a family. Together, they adopted one of the cutest, silliest, brightest little boys. That little boy has one of the best daddies in this world – a strong, smart male role model. They say a hero is someone who overcomes obstacles, so you can see how easy it is to nominate my brother in law.

Brett is my other brother in law. And if there was ever a person to overcome obstacles, it’s this guy. I won’t go into the personal details, and I think it’s perfectly okay to not share just how special and hero-worthy he is because it doesn’t matter to everyone, it matters to me (and my sister). Brett served our country as well, in the Army. I think I’m safe to speak for my sister, who loves this man so deeply and beautifully when I say that he is her hero as well.

My sister tragically lost her first husband years ago. She was then left to take care of herself and their four children. Who am I kidding? My sister is one of my biggest heroes, hands down. She took care of herself and those beautiful children by working her hardest, by walking to work and having no car, by doing everything on her own. And then, there was this little bit of magic, and this man Brett came into her life (sis, I don’t think I know the whole story!!) and he saved her. He was quite literally a hero, swooping in and saving her. He has been her rock, her supporter, her everything. The two of them together have overcome obstacle and obstacle and every time, they’ve smiled and laughed like it was nothing.

My heroes are personal loved ones, they are close to me and important members of my family.
