A garage is a useful space to have. You can choose to use it however you like, whether it’s to store your car, as a workshop, or just as a general storage space. But some people end up using their garage as a general dumping ground for anything that can’t go anywhere else. It ends up housing everything from paint and your lawnmower to old clothes and childhood trinkets. You’re not so much using your garage as treating it like a black hole that you can just throw everything into. If you do actually want to make good use of your garage, you need to clear it out.
Remove Unwanted Items
Start by purging clutter and junk from your garage. It’s likely there’s plenty of it in there and you don’t even realize what most of it is. It’s not always easy to get rid of the things that have piled up in your garage. A lot of it is stuff you’ve put in there because you’re convinced that you’ll have a need for it at some point. But it’s been in there for months or even years and you haven’t used it yet. Even if you’re thinking that you’re sure to need it right after you’ve thrown it out, there’s no point hanging onto ‘what if’s.
Organize What Remains
After you’ve had a proper clearout of your garage, your next step is to organize what’s left. Some of it might go back into the garage, hopefully in a more organized way. Other stuff could be stored elsewhere or maybe repurposed. If you want to clear some space, an additional storage space could be useful. There are different storage unit sizes so you can find one that works for you. You can store your things temporarily or look for a more long-term storage space.
Deep Clean the Space
When you have an empty space, you’ll be able to clean it out before you put anything back inside. You should have space to sweep away cobwebs, clean the floor and generally get it looking better. Getting a mop to give the whole thing a good clean is an easy way to restore it to something of its former glory. You might also want to consider some kind of coating to offer more protection to your garage. Resurfacing your garage will help to freshen it up, make it easier to maintain, and help it to last longer too.
Install New Storage
Some new storage will help you to keep your garage more organized in the future. Even if you’re intending to store your car or another vehicle in there, you’re probably still going to need space for other things. Getting some shelving installed is probably ideal for many of the things you want to store. But you might want to think about the most appropriate storage options, especially if you want to store things like bicycles, sports equipment, gardening tools, or other items that might not easily sit on shelves.
Spending a day clearing out your garage can really pay off. Plan a time to do it so you can claim the space back.
