Wouldn’t it be nice if your energy bill was super small every month? Well, we’ve all had that jaw-dropping moment when the energy bill was more than you ever wanted to pay. Don’t fret because there are ways to save money on energy and you can get your kids involved too!
1. Help hang clothes on the line: How many kids today actually get to hang clothes on the line to dry? It’d be a fun history lesson to show your kids that dryers didn’t always exist. Plus, it might allow them to appreciate all of your hard work a little more in the laundry department.
2. Go air hunting: Kids love anything that has to do with hunting. Have your kids go ‘air’ hunting in your house to help discover where air us leaking in or out of your home. Air leaks cause so many issues in the energy bill department. If you want to be sure you’ve got them all, call your energy provider. Many offer home audits where they will seal off any windows or doors where air may come in or escape.
3. Plan a cookout on a hot summer day: Let the kids help plan a picnic during those hot days this summer. Trying to make your stove compete with your air conditioner on those hot days can be a nightmare. A picnic under the shade makes perfect sense. You can save energy, keep your house cool, and even save up on cleanup.
4. Let the kids make lunch: Speaking of letting the kids help plan a picnic, let them also be in charge of making lunch one day. When it’s hot outside, making a “cold” lunch is the perfect way to help save energy. Plus, it’s an actual way the kids can feel like they are helping.
5. Thermostat duty: If your kids are anything like mine, they love to tattle on each other. Put that tattling to good use by making one of your kids in charge of the thermostat. Have them check it at least 3 times a day to make sure it’s on the right temperature. Of course, you could also invest in a programmable thermostat.
Saving energy and involving your kids can actually be fun. Older children who understand finances can take part in the actual bill paying to see just how much energy is being used and what the costs are. This is a great way to teach them about some real-life budgeting skills they will need when they are on their own.
Remember, on a serious note, you do have a choice on who provides your energy. Natural gas and electric supply products from a company like IGS Energy are a great way to make home energy affordable and could save you money in the long run.
