I think homemade chili is one of my favorite things. My mom would make it all the time, and always have saltine crackers or oyster crackers and they were a perfect crunchy compliment. Sometimes she would make corn bread muffins. It’s such a nostalgic meal for me, taking me back to when I’d watch her cook and the house would fill with the smell of whatever she was making.
Now when I make my own homemade chili, it’s like she’s there with me in the kitchen. I miss having her around. I miss her every day. So chili has become my meal to make when I’m missing her and want to warm my entire body and soul.
This recipe is crazy easy and thanks to the slow cooker, you just dump everything in and let it go until dinner time. I lovee the smell of chili throughout the whole house so I usually start mine early and on low, so the familiar scent fills every room throughout the day, and lingering well after dinner time.
Easy Slow Cooker Chili
Ingredients
- 2 cans tomato sauce
- 1 can diced tomatoes
- 1 small can of tomato paste
- 2 cans black beans
- 1 can kidney beans
- 1 lb cooked, drained ground turkey
- Spices: chili powder, garlic, onion, salt and pepper
Instructions
- Brown the ground turkey and drain away the grease
- Add everything into the slow cooker and cook on low for 8 hours, or 4-6 on high
- Serve with crackers or corn bread muffins, or whatever nostalgic side makes you think of home
- A note on the spices: these are always "to your taste" but I tend to do about 1 tablespoon of garlic and onion powders, and then a very generous dumping of chili powder. In this recipe, I used Fiesta Rooibos Dip Mix from Steeped Tea, which contains chili powder, onion flakes, cumin, parsley, and is PERFECT in chili.
