When the weather makes that drastic change here in Ohio from summer to a couple of days of fall to bitter cold for winter, all of the parents start to wonder how they will stay busy and keep the kids entertained. It’s a real dilemma that we face and while some of us may have winter sports that can keep us busy, we still have school cancellations, holiday breaks… so I want to help!
In between our mission to keep everyone healthy and help soothe any illnesses we do bring home, it’s our parental mission to bring smiles and happy memories to our children. I’ve done some research on Dayton and Cincinnati area activities that are perfect for winter as well as how to keep everyone in shape to be able to enjoy these!
Ice Skating at RiverScape Metropark in Dayton
This is a must for winter fun! This is an outdoor rink, so if you are looking for an indoor experience check out Hobart Arena in Troy, Ohio. All of the details like admission and hours can be found HERE.
Festival of Lights at Cincinnati Zoo
It’s the zoo but with 3 MILLION lights! This is a big hit with those that love light displays, so if you want something a bit different than driving around, check out the PNC Festival of Lights and make sure everyone is bundled up. Don’t forget to get hot chocolate while you’re there.
This is a fun and educational option for those snowy days. Check out their events calendar to see if there’s something special going on, there are always some super fun things happening there. It’s definitely a place for any age, so don’t be surprised if your older kids have just as much fun as the little ones! For admission and hours, head HERE.
Who doesn’t love spending a few hours exploring the aquarium? This is one of my favorite places to go and I love that when we are finished we can check out the bookstore or get some lunch and a treat at the candy store before heading home. Newport on the Levee is a great destination in Cincinnati for some fun, and the aquarium is perfect family fun. Learn their hours, ticket prices and check for any special events HERE.
Kings Island Winterfest
They had this seasonal event on hiatus for some time and brought it back and boy is it popular! There are tons of things happening in the park, plus light displays and they turn the Eiffel Tower into a huge Christmas tree! There’s lots of food, shopping, character encounters (including Peanuts characters!) and some of the rides are operating! Definitely check out the hours and cost of tickets HERE.
You will spend hours here, trust me. There are twelve different attractions in this space and certainly something for everyone – bumper cars, arcade, inflatables, mini golf, and so much more. This might not be something for every weekend but it certainly warrants setting aside an afternoon and having a blast as a family.
All of these activities require that your family be healthy, I mean, no one wants to do any of them if they feel crummy, right? I know I certainly struggle to plan fun things when I’m under the weather, so I take precautions and treat myself with care because I know winter means trying to keep everyone from saying, “I’m bored”.
I stock up at Kroger on all of our “winter essentials”, which is great because we’re maybe ten minutes away from one! I sometimes I feel like I have two jobs as a mom – the bringer of fun and the bringer of feeling better. It doesn’t matter what it is, it’s like I have an arsenal ready to go at a moment’s notice.
Remember, Theraflu Power Pods Daytime Severe Cold and Robitussin® Maximum Strength Honey Cough & Chest Congestion DM should not be used at the same time.
Dealing with common cold symptoms and looking for relief? These new Theraflu Power Pods Daytime Severe Cold pods are a pretty genius and let you sit back and sip some relief.
Feel the tingle of a cold sore? Reach for Abreva® Pump Cold Sore and Fever Blister Treatment that could heal your cold sore in 2 ½ days*!
Have little ones who feel under the weather? Well, this one is the worst, so I suggest reaching for Children’s Robitussin® Honey Cough & Chest Congestion DM! It’s non-drowsy with the taste of real honey and helps relieve coughs for hours. This product is intended for children 4 and up.
Can’t sleep because you’re congested? How about a drug-free solution like Breathe® Right Extra Clear Nasal Strips? I’ve always loved these and how they increase airflow so you can sleep.
My final, and maybe the most important suggestion for keeping everyone feeling good this winter is to clean all hard non-porous surfaces with Clorox® Disinfecting Wipes. Everyone should be washing their hands and covering their coughs and sneezes, Clorox® Disinfecting Wipes can Wipe away 99.9% of the most common allergens**
