Have you ever woken up, and it’s a clear day, and suddenly that shopping list or to-do doesn’t seem as urgent? That’s when I get in my car and drive without a plan. I’ve learned over the years that preparing for unstructured opportunities is less about looking fancy or over-equipped—it’s about having what you need in the car.

I’m not referring to a survival package. This is my constant, no-frills stash of comfort, convenience, and “just in case.”
A Blanket
Soft, versatile, and ridiculously underappreciated. I have a heavy blanket folded in the trunk at all times. It serves as a picnic blanket, beach blanket, impromptu tablecloth, or added layer in case of unseasonable weather. I’ve used it for lake picnics, reading in the shade, and once when my kid fell asleep during an evening concert and required a nap cocoon.
It occupies little space and always turns out to be an MVP.
Wipes and Hand Sanitizer
Regardless of where we wind up, someone will get sticky. Or Sandy. Or both. Travel wipes and a trusty pump of hand sanitizer have rescued us more times than we can count.
A Spare Change of Clothes
Pack that extra set. No matter if it’s a dirty trail, an unexpected splash pad, or just an “oops, Mom, I spilled,” I have always wished I had an extra outfit on hand. I keep them rolled in zip pouches for compact storage.
Snacks That Don’t Melt or Squish
You would think I was embarking on a road trip to Mars with how much I stockpile snacks, but few things will kill a spontaneous day as quickly as hangry passengers. I opt for snacks that will not melt in the sun or become strange when they’ve sat there for several weeks: applesauce packs, trail mix, granola bars, and crackers in hard packaging.
Reusable Water Bottles
Full when we exit the house, and always refillable when on the go. I dislike wasting plastic, and I particularly don’t enjoy paying $3 for water in a bottle at a convenience store. Even when just going to a park, having water is one of those essentials I don’t ever skip.
Foldable Chairs or a Portable Camping Stool
Not always glamorous, but very useful. Whether it’s an impromptu outdoor activity, sitting to watch the children in the trees, or just somewhere to sit to await food trucks opening, having a foldable chair in the trunk has made so many scenarios more comfortable.
A Basic “Adventure” Bag
This is where it gets personal. Mine contains sunscreen, bug spray, a mini first aid kit, band-aids, tissues, hair ties, and a paperback novel that I never get a chance to even start reading. You can personalize yours for your team—just take some thought about what always seems to come up when you’re on the go.
A Pillow
It may sound like an overreaction, but bear with me: an actual pillow as a car nap is absolute bliss. I’ve utilized mine when reading in the car for soccer practice, when leaning against trees, and, yes, when recovering from post-ice-cream sugar attacks. Completely worth taking up space.
Why It All Matters
Here’s the thing. Whatever it is – picnic, beach day, or impromptu evening at an RV park – these are what I never leave behind in my trunk. It’s not about having a perfect outing planned. It’s about leaving room for the unexpected ones that turn out better than anything we planned.
