Want Healthier Gums? Consider Eating These Organic Foods

There’s a lot we can derive from a person’s smile. More particularly, the gums. Not only are the gums a point of reference from which we can more or less gauge someone’s dental hygiene, gums can also be used as a telltale sign of a person’s health.

Leafy Greens

Leafy veggies like spinach are jam-packed with vitamins and minerals, and chief among these is vitamin C. This particular vitamin helps boost the production of red blood cells and it can also help mitigate inflammation. These are important in helping prevent gum disease.

Because leafy greens require more chewing, they also prompt your salivary glands to become more active. Saliva helps flush out bacteria as well as plaque, both of which cause teeth to deteriorate. You can often get leafy greens in salads and a wide variety of soups and sandwiches.

Onions

Despite having an offensive odor, onions have been proven to combat oral bacteria. By default, onions have antimicrobial properties that have been found to be highly effective against most common bacteria. Onions are often found in most salads, soups, stews, and burgers. They can even be eaten raw, if you’re able to tolerate the smell.

Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits are a rich source of vitamin C. As previously surmised, vitamin C helps prevent gum disease by reducing inflammation and triggering the production of red blood cells. As an added bonus, vitamin C also helps boost the immune system.

Your usual citrus fruits include oranges, limes, lemons and grapefruit. Citrus fruits can be consumed on their own, or they can also be blended into smoothies, stirred into yogurt, and they can also be used to top salads.

Dairy Products

Dairy products include milk, cheese, and yogurt. The one mineral that is common among these three foods is casein. Casein is the liquid portion of milk, while its counterpart, whey, is the residual substance that you find in milk.

Casein helps balance out the oral acids found in the mouth. These acids are what cause the yellowing of teeth because they quite literally corrode tooth enamel and they also affect gum tissue.

Now, these are all preventive measures. Not only do you gain healthy gums with these foods, but, as an added bonus, you also get healthy teeth.
