The Rules You Should Follow if You’re Going to Run a Marathon

If you ever see runners in a marathon on TV, maybe you feel like you want to give it a try. If you see them in person, perhaps that will tempt you even more. By participating, you’re not just getting some exercise. You’re also proving to yourself that you can do something that’s difficult and challenging. 

While you might enjoy one, you should also understand that marathons potentially feature hazards for the participants. That shouldn’t keep you from entering one, but you should know what rules you’ll need to follow to get through the experience safely.

You’ll Need to Stay Hydrated

If you decide that you want to run a marathon, then you will want to stay hydrated. Some marathons take place at warmer times of the year. However, even if you’re running in weather that isn’t intensely hot, you will still need to make sure you’re drinking plenty of liquids.

You sometimes can’t carry water or sports drinks with you while you’re running, but if you can’t, you should find hydration stations positioned all along the route. Each time you pass one, pick up a cup of water or Gatorade and drink it down. That way, you won’t experience heat exhaustion and you will regulate your body’s temperature. 

Wear Sunscreen

You should strongly consider wearing sunscreen. You can find many kinds available these days, so pick the one you like best and put it on before you start running.

You might like one of the ones that come as creams. However, many individuals who run marathons like the spray-on kind instead. 

No matter which type you prefer, though, you need that sun protection, particularly if you’re going to be out running during the day’s most punishing heat. If you’re running under a cloudless sky, it’s even more important that you protect your skin from sunburn. 

Consider Wearing Sunglasses

You will want to consider wearing sunglasses if you run a marathon. You don’t need to have them on the whole time, but if you’re running while facing the sun, you should feel glad that you’re wearing them. 

If you don’t want to have them on the whole time, you can also buy ones that come with a band attached. When you don’t need them, you can let them dangle around your neck. 

Don’t Tackle a Full Marathon Before You’re Ready

You should also challenge yourself by running a marathon, but you don’t want to attempt it if you don’t feel that you’re in good enough shape. You need to honestly assess your condition. 

If you feel that you don’t have what it takes quite yet to run a full marathon, then you might start by trying something like a half marathon or a fun run. They both have the same general idea, but they’re not as long and grueling.

If you build up your stamina over time, then you might attempt a full marathon. If you try one before you’re ready, though, you may find that you have to drop out at some point along the way. 

Don’t Run a Marathon if You Can’t Physically Do It

You should also try to assess your condition while thinking about any issues that might prevent you from engaging in something this physically strenuous. It’s one thing if you can build up your strength to the point where you can endure several punishing hours of running. If you have a condition where doing this sort of thing might seriously harm you, though, then you probably shouldn’t attempt it.

For instance, if you have severe asthma, then you likely shouldn’t enter a marathon. If you’re extremely overweight or obese, you shouldn’t do it. If you had a heart attack or stroke recently, you shouldn’t do it either.

If you’re not sure whether you can participate in this kind of strenuous physical exercise, then you should consult with your doctor. 

Keep an Eye Out for Anything Unusual

While engaging in the marathon, you should also watch out for anything that seems odd or abnormal. These days, some marathons can become terrorist targets. The attack on the Boston Marathon stands out as an example of this.

Look for individuals who might leave packages unattended. It’s not highly likely that someone will target your marathon among the hundreds that happen, but you should still keep your eyes open. 

By following these rules, you should enjoy this experience.
