I kid you not that when school starts is when my kids start to pick up bad habits and bad germs. They come inside and immediately throw their coats and bags and shoes around, they start rifling through papers and getting drinks and snacks and I stand there in the middle of a tiny tornado of chaos and want them to just stop for two minutes to wash their hands. It’s simple to implement, and if you start on the very first day of school, it will only take a couple of weeks of the same routine for it to become a healthy habit. It’s a little sanity saver that anyone can do in their home.
We’ve had this bench for YEARS but it almost always was covered with junk mail, or packages, or random storage bin lids and I finally had enough. It was the perfect spot for them to sit, and with the cubbies underneath we can add a couple of baskets for shoes and things like scarves, gloves, hats, etc. Think about your own space and what you can use that you already own before buying a special piece of furniture.

- Start. Using. It. You’ll have to remind them, but after a few times they will just come in, go through the motions and have clean hands before they start fumbling with snacks and cups and every doorknob and handle in the house. It’s worth it, mom!
