Solo Road Trip Tips

Sharing is caring!

Whether you’re planning to drive across the country or across your state on your own, a long-distance drive solo can be a lot of fun. Here’s everything you need to know to make your trip safe and fun.

Know Your Limits

You might be able to drive for hours in one day, but can you do it for multiple days in a row? People will have different limits, due to their own energy levels, ability to concentrate, or ability to sit for a long time. Know your limits. Driving while tired is very dangerous, and puts you at risk of an accident. You don’t want to be searching for a car accident lawyer because you pushed yourself too hard.

Set Your Schedule

Getting the pace right is an important part of the trip. Figure out how many days you will need and where you want to stop. Don’t try and pack too much into too short a period of time, or you’ll end up rushing and having to take risks when you drive. It can help to set off early so you can beat the traffic, and get to where you’re going with plenty of time to explore, and plenty of daylight left to safely do that exploring.

Use Multiple Tools To Map Your Trip

Using more than one kind of map can be helpful, as each map might have slightly different details. For example, some maps might have great information on places of interest that you might like to visit on your route. There are lots of National Geographic travel maps to choose from that are great for this, so you can find interesting stops. Make sure you also take a regular road map. Google Maps is useful too. A road atlas is helpful for planning your route, whereas Google Maps is more useful when you’re actually on the go. If you are using Google Maps, make sure you have an offline way to navigate too in case you lose signal or the device you’re using to navigate runs out of battery.

Know The Highlights That You Want To See

You might have a theme in mind for the trip. For example, maybe you want to see historical landmarks, visit local breweries, see movie locations, or visit areas of natural beauty. Decide what you want to see and plan a focus for your trip. Of course, you can see other things, but having a few key highlights in mind can help you to plan your route and keep some focus. Know what you really want to see and choose your must-sees. Use this information to plan your route.

Book Your Accommodation

Once you have mapped out your route, start booking your accommodation for the trip. Spontaneity is fun, but if you’re traveling alone, the last thing you want is to arrive somewhere and spend half the night searching for somewhere safe to stay. Make sure that where you will be staying is safe for solo travelers.
