Self Care Ideas To Help Busy Moms Unwind

Sharing is caring!

When you become a parent, all of your energy is devoted to your children. It feels like every single second of the day is spent making sure that they are happy and healthy, which is only natural, but what about you?

So many moms completely forget to look after themselves and many parents feel guilty about taking time for themselves because they think that it means that they are a bad parent and they are neglecting the kids, but the opposite is actually true. You can’t be an effective parent if you are burned out, so it’s very important that you have time to yourself to recharge your batteries. A good self care routine is the best way to make sure that you are working at full capacity when you are with the kids and you have the energy to care for them effectively.

Unfortunately, a lot of moms forget how to look after themselves so when they do get some time to themselves, they don’t know what to do with it. If you are feeling burned out, these are some of the best ideas for self care.

Exercise

Exercise is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress and boost your overall health. But a lot of moms don’t want to spend their alone time exercising because it can feel like a bit of a chore. However, if you can find ways to make exercise fun, it won’t feel like you are wasting your day off. Why not look for some local exercise classes that you can take with friends or even consider joining a sports team if that’s what interests you? You’ll get all of the benefits of exercising but it’s a social activity as well.

Exercise doesn’t always mean going to the gym or going for a run either. Walking, for example, is a great way to get some exercise and explore the local area at the same time. Getting out into nature is very good for your mental health, so you should see if there are any picturesque areas for walking nearby.

Yoga is another brilliant exercise option for busy moms. It’s great for toning and stretching your muscles, and it’s a better workout than people realize. Yoga also has a lot of great mental health benefits because it gives you an opportunity to step back from all of the stresses of parenthood and clear your head for a while.

Focus On Your Appearance

When you’re a busy mom, you probably don’t pay much attention to your appearance. In the past, you might have enjoyed dressing up nice or changing your hair color, but when you’re a parent, you probably dress for comfort and tie your hair up so it doesn’t get in the way. But putting effort into your appearance has a big impact on your self esteem and it’s something that you can do that is just for yourself. So, if you have some time to yourself, why not give yourself a bit of a makeover? You could try dyeing your hair a completely different color, for example. If you are a blonde, why not look into how to get chestnut hair color and give yourself a drastic change? Even something as simple as changing your hair color can make you feel fresh and revitalized, especially when you are stuck in a bit of a rut. You could also go shopping for some new clothes and buy things that look great instead of always buying something practical. Regaining your own identity and making yourself look nice helps to remind you that you are more than just a parent, which is a very important part of self care for moms.

Pick Up Old Hobbies

Hobbies often fall by the wayside when you become a mom because you just don’t have the time. But that’s a real shame because if you are passionate about something and you enjoy it, it’s a brilliant way to relax and unwind, and it’s something personal that is just for you. Think about the things that you used to enjoy doing before you had kids and see if you can pick up any of your old hobbies.

If you can’t think of anything good, why not try something new? Is there anything that you’ve always wanted to try but never quite got around to? Now is the perfect time for it and it’s the perfect way to maintain your independence as a parent. When all of your time is dedicated to the kids, it can sometimes feel like you’re missing out on the things that you want to do, but throwing yourself into new hobbies is one of the best ways to get around that.

Creative hobbies are particularly good because they help you to express yourself and offload the things that are stressing you out. Many people find that writing a journal helps them to reduce stress, and things like painting and adult coloring books have been shown to have a lot of positive mental health benefits.

Date Nights

Finding time for each other is so important for parents, but a lot of people neglect their relationship when they are focusing on the kids. But spending time with your partner is one of the best ways to relax and unwind, and remind yourself that you are a couple as well as parents. If you can find time for yourself, why not plan a date night? If you can go out somewhere nice, that’s great, but even if that isn’t an option, you can still do something nice at home. Cooking a nice meal together and watching a movie is still a good way to make time for one another or you could even just go for a walk. It doesn’t really matter what you do as long as you find time to dedicate to one another where you can connect without talking about parenting stuff.

Meet With Friends and Family

Spending time with your partner is important but spending time with friends and family has a very positive impact as well. When we are with people we care about, it helps us to relax and reduces our stress levels, which is why it’s the perfect self care activity. Unfortunately, it gets harder to maintain relationships with friends when you have kids because there is just so much going on and you don’t have time to get together as often.

If you have some time to yourself, why not get in touch with friends that you haven’t seen for a while and do something fun together? It helps to maintain your relationships with other adults, which is so important for parents, and it’s a good way to take care of your own mental health. It’s particularly helpful to spend time with other parents because you will realize that they are going through the same struggles that you are.

Catch Up On Reading Or Watching TV

People put a lot of pressure on themselves when it comes to self care. They think that they always need to be doing something worthwhile and they worry about wasting their time to themselves. But even though it’s a good idea to exercise, engage in hobbies, and meet up with friends, there’s nothing wrong with relaxing with a good book or catching up on some TV. You don’t often get time to watch your own favorite TV shows or read books when you have kids, so why not spend your free time having a catch up without having to worry about watching kids shows.

People often worry that watching TV is a waste of time but when you have been rushed off your feet, spending some time relaxing and doing nothing might be just what you need, so don’t feel guilty about it.

Try Meditation

Meditation is such a great addition to your self care routine because it helps you to reduce stress and improves your overall mental health. When you have a busy family life, there is always something to worry about. You’re trying to organize the kid’s schedule and deal with all of your own responsibilities around the home at the same time, so your mind is constantly filled with a million things. If you want to take care of your mental health, you need to find ways to clear your mind and escape all of those anxieties, and mediation helps you to do exactly that.

When you meditate, you focus on your breathing and your body and clear your mind. When thoughts do enter your mind, you simply move them along and continue focusing on your breathing. Not only does this help you to relax, it also teaches you to be more present in your everyday life, which reduces your stress levels a lot.

People often find meditation very daunting but it’s a lot simpler than you think. There are some great free meditation videos online that will teach you the basics and guide you through the process.

Self care is so important for moms and if you don’t take good care of yourself, you will burn yourself out. These are all great self care ideas to help busy moms unwind.
