When you are starting a new job, it can often be equal parts exciting and terrifying. For one thing, it’s just a new phase of life, and you never quite know how it is going to work out, and that can be quite alarming for a lot of people. But there is also the fact that you are now working for a new company and a new team, and you don’t yet know how it is all going to work out – or if it will work out at all, in truth. In this post, we are going to look at some of the red flags you should definitely not ignore if you see them in your new job.
Quick Staff Turnover
You can very quickly get a sense of how quickly people pass through the doors, and this alone should tell you much of what you need to know about what it is like to work at this place. There is usually a very good reason why nobody hangs around very long in a place, and if this is happening in your new place of work it means that you might want to be careful about putting too many hopes in the company. You never know, it could turn out to be nothing, but in the worst-case scenario it could be a huge problem indeed.
Poor Health & Safety
There is always an expectation that you should feel safe in any job, and if you feel right away as though you are not really that safe, then this is one of the most important red flags that you can possibly come across, and you need to bear in mind how important it is to pay attention to it. The truth is that your employer should be very keen to keep you healthy and safe, and if they are not, then that is a sign that you should not hang around for longer than necessary. Remember: you can always get legal help if you are injured at work and it’s not your fault, but it is preferable never to be injured in the first place.
Too Many ‘Unspoken Rules’
Once you are working in a culture where you are implicitly expected to agree with all manner of unspoken rules, that can be a sign that things are actually much stricter and more authoritarian than you originally thought. That is never a good thing, as it probably means that you are going to struggle to really be happy there, and in the worst cases it can lead to some serious breaches of ethics, so it’s the kind of situation that you want to be aware of as best as you can be. If you find yourself in this position, make sure to get out as soon as possible, for the sake of your wellbeing and your sanity.
With those red flags in mind, you should be able to keep yourself much safer from here on out when you are choosing jobs in the future.
