Parenting 101: Setting A Good Example

Sharing is caring!

When you welcome your little bundle of joy home for the very first time, the chances are that you are overjoyed and elated, but you might also be a little bit overwhelmed and daunted. For the first time, you have to consider another human being’s needs before your own. You have this surge of unconditional love for your newborn and you will do everything in your power to protect him or her and shower them with love and care and support for the rest of their days.

As a newbie mom, you need to now take on the mantle of a responsible parent. It is your responsibility to set a good example for your child, to be a role model and to guide them through life. You want your little one to come to you for advice, to look up to you and feel supported should they encounter problems throughout their life. It can be tricky to find the balance between being a supportive parent and being smothering. Take your guide from them. However, you can make it your mission to set a good example. This starts from the moment they are home all the way through to their adult years. Take a look at these key moments in life where you can be a strong role model for your child.

Relationships

The most difficult part of being a mom is learning when to let go. If your little darling is suddenly enquiring about relationships, getting interested in boys and is asking about bringing a potential suitor around for dinner, you should feel thankful that they are being open with you. Plenty of kids and young people hide relationships from their parents for fear of being judged. Set a good example by inviting them around for dinner and get to know the person that your little cherub likes so much.

Often, these human beings are not who we would have chosen for our offspring. Don’t make a scene or forbid your child from seeing them. This will make them rebel and you will push them away. Instead, let it ride out and have faith that your child will make the right choice for themselves eventually. Everyone learns from relationships. Set a good example for your child by ensuring that you maintain strong relationships with family, friends and your partner.

Driving

When your little darling becomes a young adult, the chances are that they will want their freedom. This means learning to drive and getting their own set of wheels. It’s up to you to set a good example when it comes to road safety. As a parent, make sure that you are a defensive driver who does not entertain the concept of road rage. Remain calm and adhere to speed limits.

When your little cherub decides that they want to learn to drive, take them out and show them the ropes. Empower them by giving them praise and demonstrating some key maneuvers. Sometimes accidents and collisions happen even if they aren’t your fault. If your child does find themselves in a sticky situation, concentrate on finding car accident lawyers who fight for maximum compensation rather than getting mad at them for writing off your vehicle. As long as they are safe, this is the most important thing.

Money

Start teaching your kids about money from an early age. When they are old enough, give them pocket money and encourage them to budget and save up for toys, gadgets or games that they might want. Ensure that you lead by example and don’t use credit like it is going out of fashion. This shows your child that debt is a good thing and something that you can always rely on. Instead, save up for your new kitchen, car or your next family holiday.

Make sure that your little darlings are able to see the value of money. Don’t give in to their every whim and buy them whatever new smartphone that they want just because their pals have it. Make sure that they earn money, get a part time job when they can, and help them to open a bank account. All of these factors can help them to appreciate money and they may place less importance on materialistic things and more emphasis on family, health and happiness.

As a parent, it can be difficult to be the perfect guide and example for your kid. However, through positive motivations and love, you can help your child navigate their way through life by being the best role model you can be.
