One of the frustrating things about looking after a home is that the work is never really finished – you clean one room and another needs attention, you fix something in the kitchen and then notice a problem in the garden, you finally get around to dealing with a job that’s been annoying you for weeks, and somehow you’ve added three new jobs to the list before you’ve even put the tools away…
That’s probably why home maintenance can feel massively stressful sometimes, but the good news is that looking after your home doesn’t have to feel like an endless battle, and a lot of that comes down to changing how you think about it. Keep reading to find out more.

Stop Treating Every Job Like An Emergency
Have you ever noticed how quickly a simple repair can start feeling urgent once you’ve spotted it? For example, you might see a loose cupboard handle and suddenly it’s all you can see every time you walk into the room, and the same thing happens with dripping taps, cracked fence panels, marks on walls, and all sorts of other things.
The reality is that some jobs genuinely need dealing with quickly, but plenty of others can wait a week or two without causing any problems at all, and actually working out the difference can make a huge impact because then it’s a lot easier to decide what actually needs your attention first.
Accept That Good Enough Is Sometimes Good Enough
A lot of homeowners put themselves under pressure because they think everything has to look (and be) totally perfect, but remember that houses are lived in, people make mess, and life happens; that’s the point.
Of course, it’s important to keep on top of things, but there’s also a point where constantly chasing perfection starts creating more stress than the actual maintenance itself, so just sit back and accept that some things aren’t going to be one hundred percent correct or complete. It’s fine.
Make Decisions Faster
One thing that often makes home maintenance drag on is indecision. For example, you know a room needs repainting, but you spend three months choosing a colour, and meanwhile, the job just sits there getting more annoying.
Sometimes the most helpful thing you can do is make a reasonable decision and move on. True, it might not be the perfect decision, but in a lot of cases it’s more than good enough.
Keep Reliable Contacts Close
There’s something reassuring about knowing who you’re going to call when something goes wrong, and whether it’s a plumber, electrician, decorator, gardener, or other professional home services, having trusted contacts already saved can remove a huge amount of stress when problems pop up, as they’re sure to do from time to time.
Focus On Progress Rather Than Completion
A lot of people approach home maintenance as though they’re trying to reach a finish line, but the finish line doesn’t really exist because there’s always going to be something else to paint, repair, clean, replace, organise, improve, or update… That’s basically just how it is.
Once you accept that, it gets so much easier to stop measuring success by whether everything is finished and start measuring it by whether you’re making progress, and when you look at it that way, home maintenance feels a lot less stressful because you’re no longer trying to win an impossible race – you’re just looking after your home one job at a time, which is all anyone can really do.
