How To Help Your Aging Parents Enjoy Better Health

Sharing is caring!

Many adults find themselves in the position of caring for their parents. It’s a difficult job, but one that most people are more than willing to take on. There are myriad scenarios that can arise as people get older, but there are some simple steps we can take as grown-up children to support healthy aging. In this guide, we’ll share some tips to enable you to help your loved ones enjoy better health as they age.

Staying active

Leading an active lifestyle is one of the best ways to reduce common health problems in older people and boost mental health. Regular exercise decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and some types of cancer. It can also lower the risk of depression and dementia. It’s common for seniors to do less exercise. This is often due to health issues or limited mobility, but there are lots of activities you can do, even if you’re not as flexible, mobile, or nimble as you once were. Examples include walking, swimming, and chair-based yoga and aerobics.

Try to encourage your parents to be as active as possible by planning active days out, helping them find and get to local groups and classes, and making time for activities like going for a walk. Simple things like an evening stroll can be hugely beneficial. Not only will everyone benefit from moving and increasing their heart rate, but being outside is also restorative, and spending time with others boosts mental health.

Exploring living options

The future is often an elephant in the room when it comes to conversations with aging relatives. Many people don’t like to talk about needing care or moving out of a home they love. It’s helpful for everyone involved to discuss future plans and explore different options. There are many ways to support independent living that don’t involve moving into a care home or having carers visit you at home. Research can help you identify options and see what’s available.

Accommodation for people who have retired is a great option for those who want to enjoy the freedom of living alone or with a partner and easy access to amenities and facilities. Search online, read reviews, and ask people for recommendations to help you choose one of the best retirement communities in the area. Another avenue you could explore is living with your parents. It is increasingly common for seniors to move in with adult children. Pew Research Center data suggests that around 15% of older adults live with their child. This percentage has doubled in the last 30 years.

Staying connected socially

A thriving social life can have a dramatic impact on your health and well-being in your senior years. Loneliness is more common once you give up work, but there are lots of ways to build connections and prevent isolation in old age. Examples include taking up hobbies, joining local groups, societies, and clubs, meeting people online, and getting involved in local events and community initiatives. As a child supporting senior parents, you can help by researching opportunities to make friends, taking your parents to regular group meetings and events, and assisting with communications technology, for example, helping them make and receive video calls and use social media.
