Shots don’t need to be relegated to crowded college bars with sticky floors or darkened nightclubs with thumping bass. These fun drinks are sure to please at grown-up gatherings as well. Whether it’s New Year’s Eve at home or a poolside holiday celebration, there are hundreds of different shots to liven up every party.
Lemon Drop Shot
Lemon drop martinis are a classic, but this bite-sized version of the classic drink adds some much-needed fun. To make this tart lemon drop shot, you’ll need:
- 2/3 oz lemon vodka
- 1/2 oz lemon juice
- 1/4 oz simple syrup
Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake until well combined. Strain into a shot glass – preferably chilled – garnish with a lemon wedge, and pucker up.
Apple Pie Shot
Fun for fall parties like Halloween or a “Friendsgiving” dinner, this sweet shot really does taste just like a boozy, liquified apple pie. You’ll need:
- 1/2 oz sour apple or green apple liqueur
- 1/2 oz butterscotch schnapps
Combine the apple liqueur and butterscotch schnapps in a shot glass and garnish with a dash of cinnamon.
This color-blocked shot features just the right amount of red, white, and blue for Fourth of July celebrations. The layers are made of:
- 1 part grenadine
- 1 part white creme de cacao
- 1 part blue curaçao
Pour grenadine into the shot glass and let settle. Carefully pour in white creme de cacao so it rests on top of the grenadine. Once the creme de cacao has settled, pour in the blue curaçao and let it settle.
To get the layers right, these liquors need to be added in this order and poured gently. It’s best to pour them onto the side of the glass rather than directly on top of the layer below. Getting the layering effect right can take some practice, so it’s best to try the technique out before the big day.
Pineapple Upside-Down Shot
Another shot that mimics the taste of a popular dessert, the Pineapple Upside-Down shot is easy to make and sure to please. You’ll need:
- 3/4 oz pineapple juice
- 3/4 oz vanilla vodka
- 1 splash grenadine
Add the vanilla vodka and pineapple juice to the shot glass, then add the grenadine. Allow the grenadine to settle at the bottom before serving for a layered shot effect.
Scooby Snack Shot
Melon liqueur and pineapple juice combine to give this shot its psychedelic color, reminiscent of the Mystery Machine’s paint job. To make this adult Scooby Snack, you’ll need:
- 1/2 oz coconut rum
- 1/2 oz melon liqueur
- 1/4 oz pineapple juice
- 1/4 oz heavy cream
Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake until thoroughly mixed. Strain into a shot glass.
Irish Flag Shot
A popular shot for Saint Patrick’s Day, the Irish Flag Shot looks just like the Emerald Isle’s iconic tricolor and is another shot that requires some pouring skills to ensure the right layered look. These layers come from:
- 1/2 oz creme de menthe
- 1/2 oz Irish creme liqueur
- 1/2 oz Grand Marnier
Add each ingredient to a shot class one by one, starting with the creme de menthe. Using the back of a spoon to make the pour gentle, add the Irish creme liqueur and allow it to settle. Again using the spoon, add the Grand Mariner.
If you try to add the ingredients in another order, the layers will not work, since they rely on the differing sugar amounts, or specific gravity, of all the ingredients to float on top of each other.
These are just a few of the shots for you, your friends, and your family to try.
