mom grandma sistersAre you familiar with the term “wing woman”? A Wing Woman is someone who swoops in to save women from difficult situations and embarrassing moments by providing helpful life advice. You have a Wing Woman in your life already – she could be your mother, your sister, your friend or even a public figure. I feel very fortunate to have had my Wing Woman since before I was even born. My sister, Cathy, is older (and occasionally wiser) but most definitely fits the bill of my Wing Woman.

My sister and I live 500 miles apart, so we have to rely on social media and technology to stay close. We had to do it when our mom lost her battle to cancer. We had to do it when our grandma passed away. We had to do it when my sister’s husband suffered a traumatic brain aneurysm and eventually lost his life. We’ve suffered so much loss in our lives, with so many people taken from us before we were ready. I leaned on her and she leaned on me.

I’m sure that I’ll stumble my way through this, and more than likely make myself cry (and anyone reading). I’m sure that my sister will read this and get all “ugly cry” and big sisterly on me, but I’m just so thankful to have her in my life. Even when we don’t talk for days, even weeks, because life is just so busy. I love that we can pick up the phone and even though the children screaming in the background, we silently think “Oh my gosh, I have so much to do”, we can catch up.

Life has thrown us so many curve balls, so many obstacles, and our relationship as sisters and friends has stood strong. I thank her often for everything she’s done, for being there, for being my biggest supporter of anything I do. I hope she knows how proud I am of HER, how I look up to her as a big sister and role model.
