It’s a privilege to get older, and one that not all of us are lucky to experience, so instead of worrying about getting older or trying to cling to our youth like it’s all that matters, more of us should be embracing our lives as we get older with each passing year. If we are going to do that, then it’s fair to say that we are going to need to start taking various aspects of our health more seriously because older bodies face more challenges and are more likely to succumb to various conditions, right?

That being the case, let’s take a look at 7 aspects of your health you should give moe attention as the number of candles on your birthday cake start to get bigger and bigger.

1. Your hearing health

As you get older, you are more likely to experience issues like tinnitus and hearing loss than you are when you are younger. Of course, not everyone who gets older has  issues with their hearing health, but it is really very common, so it is worth paying attention to.

The good news is, it’s pretty easy to take care of your hearing health by doing things like not listening to music that is too loud (especially if you are using earphones) having regular checkups, and reading this piece on hearing loss myths and facts for seniors. You should also try to wear ear defenders if you are going to be subjected to loud noises for more than a few minutes, and never, and I mean never, use Q-tips to clean your ears.

2. Physical activity

As you get older, you might think about starting to wind down and relax more, and there is nothing wrong with that, but it does not mean that you should stop completely, especially when it comes to movement and exercise.

You see, as you get older, physical activity becomes even more important in some ways. Weight-bearing exercises help to mitigate against the kind of bone loss that often comes with age, for example, and ditto for muscle loss too. Things like yoga and Pilates are also useful because they can help you to maintain your balance as you age, and even just going for a walk and keeping moving will help your body and mind to age more gracefully, too.

3. A balanced diet

When you are young, you can sometimes get away with eating nothing but burgers, cookies and chips and still remain slim and healthy, but this kind of diet really does start to catch up with you as you get older, and that means you will need to start watching what you are eating more carefully if you want to age gracefully and healthily. A diet rich in lean proteins, whole grains, fruit and veg is the best at any age. Oh,. and remember as you get older, your bones need a bit more help, so make sure you are getting tons of calcium, too.

4. Your brain health

We all know that, as we get older, we are likely to experience some level of cognitive decline which means we are not quite as sharp as we once used to be. If we are very unlucky, it may be more serious than getting a bit forgetful, and we could develop Alzheimer’s or dementia. Although there is no foolproof way to resist this kind of mental decline, there are some things that will help.

For example, meeting friends, staying sociable and connecting with people is one of the best things you can do to stave off cognitive decline.

Having lots of hobbies, especially if they involve a lot of thinking, like reading, crossword puzzles, or sudoku, is another.

Eating a diet rich in fruits, veggies, and whole grains, as mentioned above, is also great for your brain health as you get older, too.

5. Heart health

Heart attacks and other heart-related issues are more common once you pass the age of 5, so it really is important that you take looking after your heart as seriously as you possibly can. Some of the things we have already mentioned, ike a healthy diet, and exercise, can seriously help you with this, but other things, like limiting alcohol, quitting smoking, and eating a diet that is low in saturated fats, are also recommended. Ideally, you should also have your physician check your heart annually as you get older, too.

6. Your mental health

Many older people develop poor mental health, and more often than not, this is because they feel lonelier and isolated than ever before. This is why joining support groups, meeting new people, visiting friends and family, and just getting out into the world nd doing things is so important, no matter how old you get. If you can’t get out, then home carers are great at providing company and keeping you feeling mentally well.

7. Sleep

Sleep is really important for people of all ages, but when you get older, you can often find yourself struggling to get enough, and this can have a huge effect on your physical and mental health. That’s why you need to get serious about setting up a sleep routine – going to bed and waking up at the same time each day – and why you should make sure that your bed is comfortable, your bedroom is comfy too, and you have things like lavender and melatonin that can help you to drift off.

Getting older is a privilege, but it is not always easy on the body or mind, os you need to take extra care of yourself as you age, and thereis no better time than now to start yourself off on that process because, evej if you are still quite young, all of these things will be good for you regardless, and the sooner you get into the habit of looking after oyurself in these seven ways, the easierr it will be to keep it up when you are much older, right?
