Moving can be a very overwhelming event. Just the thought of having to pack up your entire home can make some people want to break out into hives! Don’t worry, however – there are things you can do to make the transition to a new home smoother. I’ve personally lost count of how many times I’ve moved from one home to another. I stopped counting at thirteen, and no, none of them are because of the military!
Read on to find out six moving tips to make packing your home easier!
Begin packing as soon as you decide to move. Many of your belongings can be put into boxes right away, including non-seasonal clothing, entertainment items, and extra sets of things you have in your home (think bedding, dishes, etc.). Visit your storage areas and storage unit if you have one and clean them out and pack those items. If they are in storage, clearly you won’t need them between now and your move.
Start packing least used rooms first. Along with the extras or items not needed at the moment, the attic and basement are great places to pack first. They tend to store items that you won’t go looking for until you are in your new home. Plus, you’ll be making progress on your move without having boxes and tape taking up space your most trafficked rooms!
Declutter your possessions as you pack. The urge to toss everything in boxes just so you can get completely packed may be there, but you can reduce the amount of work you’ll have unpacking at your new home by donating or throwing out things you no longer want or need rather than packing them.
Have plenty of packing materials on hand. Tape, boxes, markers, and bubble wrap are necessities when it comes to loading up your home for a move. Boxes can be purchased, or you can ask local businesses if they have any to give away. The rest can be bought from Walmart. You don’t want to run out of any of these items – doing so can cause you to procrastinate on your packing!
Don’t forget to organize as you pack! Pack one room at a time if you can, putting related items into each box. Label your box with the name of the room they come in, and add a short list of what’s inside if you have time. This will make unpacking your belongings much easier when the time comes.
Pack your most used and needed possessions last. This will cause them to be loaded into the moving truck last – therefore, they will be the first things to be unpacked at the new house. Better yet, pack these in your own vehicle so they don’t get mixed in with items that don’t need to be immediately unpacked. Label these boxes with a star or large sticker to designate where you can find your essentials, just in case there’s a mix up.
BONUS TIP! At your new home, add signs to doors and doorways to label the rooms. This will help you remember who picked what bedroom, and any of your helpers can stop asking, “Where does this one go?” every time they carry a box inside. Make sure to label your boxes largely and clearly with the same labels (maybe color-code, or large shapes, or just name the rooms)!
