It’s that time of year again! Suitcase packing time. But before you begin, make sure you check out our essential dos and don’ts suggestions for suitcase packing below.
- Do choose a hardshell case
First of all, when it comes to packing, it pays to have the right type of case. Where possible, always invest in and take a hard shell case on wheels. This i because hard shell cases provide much better protection for your possessions, and the wheels make it easy to transport the case without having to carry it.
- Do use a waterproof container for your toiletries
Arriving at your destination only to find that your shampoo has exploded all over your dinner outfit for that night is never fun. Always pack toiletries in a waterproof bag, and add another carry bag for extra protection over the top.
- Do pack all your sun protection
Beach holiday, city break or ski escape, you’ll still need proper protection from the sun. That means you must make sure you have a sun hat and plenty of SPF ahead of time. If you wear glasses, you’ll also need to make sure that you pack your prescription sunglasses in your luggage as well. If you can find an online provider that offers this type of sunglasses at a good price is always worth adding one pair to your hold luggage and one to your carry-on. Then you will have sun protection as you deboard the plane, and you won’t be left short if your hold luggage goes missing either.
- Don’t pack any devices with lithium-ion batteries in your hold luggage
Any item with a lithium-ion battery is not allowed in the hold when you get on a plane. That means things like the following items should always be placed in your carry-on luggage:
- Handheld game consoles
- Laptops
- Tablets
- Phones
- Power packs
- E-readers
- Cameras
It also means that if you have these devices with you that you will have something to do while you wait in the airport lounge.
Remember, though, that many airlines ask for these to be charged up so they can be turned on and validated as genuine before being passed by security.
- Don’t forget to pack travel laundry detergent
Packing a small sealed bottle of travel laundry detergent is always a good choice because it allows you to pack fewer clothes and then wash and wear once you get to your destination. Its also life-saving for any spills or stains as you can treat them then and there rather than having to wait until you get the item home when the stain has dried in.
- Don’t forget to use packing cubes

Until very recently, packing cubes were not a very well-known item. However, they are incredibly useful when packing your case for your next holiday because they allow you to keep certain categories of items together. This means not only is your case neater and has more space, but you know exactly where everything is at all times. Even if you can’t unpack properly when you arrive. Packing cases are also great because you can assign the largest size to be your dirty laundry storage for your stay, keeping these items together and away from your other clean clothes as you pack to go home.
