Buy a New-to-You Car

If your current car has seen better days, you might want to consider investing in a new one. Older vehicles that need frequent repairs can become costly. Instead of paying to keep fixing something that always has a problem, your money will be better spent on a reliable pre-owned vehicle. Older vehicles have an imbalance in their cost of maintenance, overall fuel efficiency numbers, and fewer safety features. All of these aspects can cost you money that you can put into a new car instead. Look at the car inventory available for the makes and models you are interested in to find a car that meets your needs and will require less upkeep to save you money over time.

Upgrade Your Appliances

The same rationale applied to getting a newer vehicle is also applicable to your major home appliances. While your HVAC system, water heater, dishwasher, refrigerator, washing machine, and clothes dryer are all expensive items, having any one of them break can actually cost you more money. This is especially true if your dishwasher or water heater cracks, causing a slow leak and resulting in mold and damage to the walls and carpets, or there is a fast break that floods the basement, causing even more damage. These are not cheap fixes and may end up costing you more in repairs than a new appliance would have. If your appliances are old or you notice problems, take action before something bigger occurs.Look for annual sales, government incentives, and tax credits on energy-rated appliances to get the best deal possible. Another money-saving bonus to note is that new appliances run more efficiently, so you will see a reduction in your related monthly utility bills.

Go Back to School

This section is not technically about saving money, but it is about making more money. If you have an opportunity to go back to school for a degree, an advanced degree, or a trade certification, you should consider taking advantage of it. Yes, you will have to spend money to make more money, but if there are supervisory positions in your workplace or other jobs you are considering that require more schooling on your part, you might have a golden opportunity to increase your lifetime earning opportunities. It is helpful to note that many companies will pay for your continuing education while you are working for them, and in exchange for your continued employment. If you are not aware of any programs in your workplace, reach out to the human resources department.
